To create with what is at hand, I look up to the pioneer folks for this kind of imaginative art and craft.
In the wood there is life, love, power... it speaks if you listen, the tales unfold in the arting process, and then there is form.
Over at MAIDA the spring challenge was themed "Attic Find (discovery) Doll" so I decided to do early type wooden dolls that I so love. I carved these from cured wood I had saved from visits to the forest and beach. This challenge fell in the midst of a big move in which I've had to store my tools and arting stuff for some time until I move into the new place -- in "Make Do" fashion I created Lady Gertrude from scraps and very few tools. My goal with this doll was to give her a rough primitive appearance. She is truly a delight in person.
I'm making a batch of wooden dolls, if you are interested or have any questions please feel free to email me here.
The trees, they do speak, and see.
